I love Australia Day. I associate it with the new year well and truly being underway plus fun stuff like the beach, Triple J’s hottest 100 and barbecues in the backyard with friends. It is also Miss L’s birthday, she’s turning 9, over the years I’ve come to realise that it is a bit of a sucky day for a kid to have their birthday on.
It’s usually before school has gone back and because there is often a long weekend people have gone away or have plans so we try and make it as fun as possible for her. I think we might turn it in to a three day celebration just to really make her feel special. Why not take some inspiration from the things I have planned and head out for some family fun this weekend.
Tomorrow afternoon we will be headed to Glenelg beach in Adelaide to join in the Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge. Funds raised from the challenge support the local Glenelg nippers, something close to our heart because our kids are nippers too.
Registration costs just $25.00 and participants receive a giant inflatable Havaianas (valued @ $49.95). There will be a limited number of registrations available on the day for $30.00. Event details for Glenelg are:
Date: Saturday 26th January, 2013
Where: Glenelg Beach (The Foreshore)
Registration opens at 8.00am
Beach activities: 10.00am – 4.00pm
World Record attempt: Marshalling from 1.30pm, 2.00pm world record attempt
BBQ: 11.00am – 3.00pm
Event concludes: 4.00pm
To register and find out more information about the event, both in Adelaide and in other states, pop to the Havaianas Thong Challenge Website. Perth took out the event last year, it would be pretty cool to see SA take home the win in 2013 with the challenge in its 8th year.
Saturday night we will be headed to the Baseball to see our home team Adelaide take on Canberra in the third game of the series. ABL series are being played in Adelaide, Perth and Sydney this weekend. You can read about why we love taking our family to the baseball here.
Sunday afternoon will be another baseball game for us but I’m planning a picnic and walk in the botanic gardens first. We want to plant some fruit trees in our garden as part of our family backyard farm project so we will be visiting the shop after taking a wander to get some inspiration. I’m planning to find out some more information about community gardens while we are there too.
We will take things easy on Monday, maybe head to the local pool and let the big girls loose on the waterslides or go for a walk on the beach with the kite if the kids aren’t in the mood for swimming. The weather in Adelaide is supposed to be windy, so a perfect opportunity for kite flying and making people smile. I should probably churn out a few laps at the pool because I am swimming in the Brighton Jetty Classic open water swim next weekend.
Tuesday is the first day back at school for the kids, they are all pretty excited about it. It will be Miss J’s first day at kindy. I’m excited for her but also feeling a bit sad that our baby is growing up so fast.
