source: emailed to me by Charlotte, not sure where she got it from
Our family have been big Harry Potter followers for years.
It started a week or two after Charlotte was born. I read the first three books out aloud to her. Taking the 'it doesn't matter about the words it's all about the tone' cue from Three Men and a Baby we found that the sound of our voices helped to settle her to sleep so we read. Perhaps that's where it started?
I can't remember when the first time was that the girls saw The Philospher's Stone on DVD but I do know that Charlotte read it during the summer holidays between year 1 and year 2. She finished the 7th just recently.
J has a few spells in her vocabulary. She has been known to point a wand at me and 'expelliarmus' me. She loves the movies just as much as the others do.
A visit to Hogwarts at Universal Studios was high on our agenda when we went to the US earlier in the year. It was fantastic seeing it all come to life.
So, yes, Harry Potter fans we are.
Recently Sebastian was telling us about his day over dinner and how he had been playing Star Wars with his friends at kindy. I asked him what he knew about Star Wars.
'Well...there are a goodies and there are baddies' he replied.
Neither of us have ever been HUGE Star Wars nerds but we had seen all the movies eps IV to VI several times and we went to the movies to see Episode I, I vaguely remember seeing II and I know we hadn't seen III. We have 2 large Star Wars lego models. Thank heavens we no longer have a TV old enough for the X-Wing to occupy the space on top!
That Friday night we sat down as a Family to start our Star Wars experience, and education of the children.
Over the course of the first week of holidays we made our way through 2 more movie evenings.
By Episode II we had 4 wannabe Jedi knights. There were tears from Sebastian towards the end of Episode III as Anakin chose the dark side and because Darth Vader.
Sitting down to watch Episode IV (the original Star Wars) on Tuesday night it was bizarre listening to the chatter as the movie started because they knew that Darth Vader was Luke's father, I mean that's a fact we never discovered until the Return of the Jedi.
We were amused by the fact Charlotte couldn't quite figure how princess Leia fit into the picture and at the same time she was wondering when Luke's twin sister was going to show up. There was definite disappointment when Obi Wan let Darth Vader take him down.
The wands have become light sabres and there has been more talk of being a Jedi than of the Wizarding world. There have been repeated requests to see the next one...they'll have to wait until Saturday night and then waiting until the following Friday to watch the final chapter will no doubt be painful!
It's been fun rediscovering that long time ago in a galaxy far far away with the kids. I'm glad that they have been enjoying it and can see it will become a firm favourite. It will be interesting asking them in a few weeks whether they would rather be a wizard or a Jedi Knight. I suspect that the big girls would choose the wizarding world and Sebastian will stick with the force.
Me? I'm not sure. I suspect I'm probably a wizard at heart, I never fell asleep during a Harry Potter movie but I can't say that's true for Star Wars ;)
Which one are you? Jedi Knight or Wizard?
