It is nearly 16 years since I stood before Dave Grohl on stage for the first time. Guys with long hair don’t really do it for me but there is something about Mr Grohl that makes him unbelievably sexy. I suspect it has something to do with that tattoo on his forearm and the cheeky kinda evil grin.
Last night I embraced my inner teenager and headed of to Adelaide oval to see the Foo Fighters + support acts and it was no different to the first time I saw them all those years ago, 2+ hours of pure, mesmerising awesomeness. The engagement with the audience, the fact you believe that right then, at that moment the band is completely in the moment with you, that’s what makes live music so powerful.
We managed to end up in pretty good spots, Steven was basically on the fence in the front corner between the stage and the catwalk, as good as it gets, and he got the photos to prove it. Jess and I were about 2 metres further back down the catwalk, but still on the fence.
There was a sea of short people at the concert last night…seriously short, the girl in front of me stood with the top of her head inches under my chin. Lauren was somewhere a bit further down the catwalk again, with such a long catwalk the stage has plenty of great vantage points. He even went and played out on the little stage for about 4 songs…especially for the people ‘in the shitty seats’.
There was plenty of parading up and down the catwalk, he stood and played in front of us at one point. I consciously kept my mouth shut. I have a little aversion to sweat and no matter how awesome I think someone is I don’t want the sweat they are shaking off their face and body landing in my mouth. That’s how close he was. From the long black hair to the scuffed black skatie Cons, sweat pouring off. Awesome.
Although the Foo Fighters are a band, they couldn’t exist without Dave Grohl, he did single handedly write and record the entire first album before he put the band together after all. To be honest, other than when they were introduced, I didn't really notice the band. It's hard to tear your eyes away from Dave.
On our drive home tonight we were listening to the Foos for about half the trip. They undoubtedly sound the same live as they do recorded, better because of the atmosphere that just sinks inside you and makes you smile and sing so hard your face hurts, drink it in and never want to forget the experience. That's what live music does.
Dave promised that next time they come they will be playing at 'the little place down the road'. Seeing Green Day at Thebby, my first big concert experience is burned in my brain...Eddie at the Thebby earlier this year was so so so fantastic. I'll take a couple of tickets to see The Foo Fighters there, whenever that may be, right now please and thankyou.
Awesome.
What has been your best live music experience? Do you go for the up close mosh pit experience or is a sit down affair more your kind of thing?
Tatum xx
PS: My excellent husband, who is nearly as awesome as Dave Grohl ;) , took all the photos.
